Spirulina and chlorella are entirely different foods although they taste and look alike. They are both full of antioxidants and are nutrient-dense. 

While spirulina has been used as a food source for thousands of years, chlorella was discovered after the 19th century. 

Differences between Chlorella and spirulina

The bottom line

Any of these blue algae is better than none, but chlorella is a little bit more complete than spirulina.
