What is it with Instagram stories that keep us hooked?

You tap on the first circle and you get trapped in a loop of neverending sneak peeks of other people’s lives. But why do we become so addicted?

Instagram stories have been around since august 2016 and only one year after the launch, Instagram got to 150 million users on stories, by the end of 2017, they had reached 300 million. In 2021 over 500 million people are daily users of Instagram stories. But what is it that makes them so addictive?

Instagram stories trigger the same feelings as when you binge-watch Netflix episodes. They are quick, readily available, personal, and less planned –which contributes to the lure greatly.

The fact that the stories disappear after 24 hours unless saved, makes people feel like they can be more authentic. Humans like the fact that they are less manicured than the pictures you would post on your grid because they make the pictures more relatable –photoshopped perfection makes us feel threatened.

People tap on the stories seeking live and unedited content –our nature is to be curious. But we must be careful not to get trapped in a circle of unreal content. One of the main issues of Instagram stories is digitally-induced body dysmorphia, as people have grown used to seeing themselves through filters.
