What is pink noise?
Noises are divided into colors: White, black, brown, and pink noise. The color of noise is determined by the energy of the sound signal and it depends on how energy is distributed over various frequencies, or the speed of sound.
Pink noise consists of all frequencies we can hear, but the energy is more intense at lower frequencies so it creates a deep sound.
Nature is full of pink noise, including:
- Rustling leaves
- Steady rain
Can pink noise help you sleep better?
While we sleep, our brain continues processing sounds so they can affect how we rest. Some sounds can disrupt our sleep but some can relax our brain and promote better sleep.
According to a study in the Journal of Theoretical Biology, pink noise is able to reduce brain waves, which increases stable sleep. Another study also showed a positive link between pink noise and deep sleep.
How can I try pink noise to sleep?
You can try it by listening on your computer, smartphone, or there are sleep machines like a white noise machine. Once you have your pink noise, experiment with the volume to find what works for you. For example, you can search for a video with rainy or windy sounds and listen to it with headphones or put it slow on your computer.
Lack of sleep can make your everyday life difficult and pink noises can help with that. So, if you have sleeping problems try listening to nature sounds on your phone and relax!
