Everyone remembers that push-up Emily Blunt does in The Edge of Tomorrow. Not to mention how fit Brie Larson looks in Captain Marvel. Roles like that take a lot of preparation, and all these celebrities rely on one man to help them get into superstar shape: Jason Walsh.
Scrolling through Brie Larson’s Instagram account, you will eventually find the video that exposed her tough training to become Captain Marvel. It shows the actress pushing a 5000-pound Jeep. In recent years, more and more actors undergo tough training routines to not just look the part of an action hero but actually do their own stunt work.
Celebrity trainer Jason Walsh is the mastermind behind many of Hollywood’s bodies. He famously got Bradley Cooper to bulk up for American Sniper and trained Emily Blunt for her role as a soldier in the Edge of Tomorrow. He is also behind Emma Stone's training for La La Land and Brie Larson's killer shape in Captain Marvel.
So what are Jason Walsh's workouts like?
Walsh believes in working out on a four-day-split schedule with a rest day on Wednesdays. Beginners can train every other day, with active rests (walking, yoga) in between workouts. He usually focuses on mobility and strength training, training with both bodyweight and free weights. His workouts are low-impact and incorporate moves like crawling, walking, running, and climbing.
The best thing you can do is stick to the most basic multi-joint moves. Squats. Lunges. Pull-ups. They’ve been around since the beginning of weight training because they’re the best. Use them.
His favorite exercise?
"It is, and always will be, the deadlift and variations of the deadlift. It's a complex movement that incorporates every major muscle group working together. It’s very important," he told Healthista
Lucky for us, Jason Walsh has an Instagram account @risemovement where he occasionally posts follow-along workouts.
