Way before Captain Marvel I was already into Brie Larson’s work. These two Netflix are a must if you are curious about magick, comics, and lots of glitter.
Brie Larson has gained popularity in the last few years, but way before Captain Marvel and The Room, Brie had starred in two movies that I find particularly interesting.
We are used to seeing her in superhero roles in movies like Avengers: Endgame and other Movies like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings from the Marvel Comics Multiverse, but before the blockbuster superhero movies, she had directed and starred in one of my favorite movies: The Unicorn Store.
Unicorn Store (2017)
Unicorn store (2017), written by Samantha McIntyre, is a movie about coming of age. It’s the story about an almost 30-year-old artist that finds it hard to fit in society and suffers from depression. She has been living with her parents and refuses to grow up, eventually, she gets a job she doesn’t enjoy much at a PR agency.
Shortly after she got the job she receives a letter from a salesman –Samuel L. Jackson– inviting her to “The store”. She offers her a unicorn, something she has always wanted. This is when she starts the quest of finding a place for her unicorn, juggling her personal life, her work life and becoming an adult. The photography and the colors are vibrant and it is an overall sweet story that counts with the participation of actors such as Joan Cusack and Bradley Whitford. The movie is full of fantasy, magic and the empowering message of accepting who you are.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a romantic action comedy directed by Edgar Wright, based bu the graphic novel series Scott Pilgrim. Scott, played by Micheal Cera, is a musician that participates in the battle of the bands and he has to fight all his new crush ex-boyfriends. The combination of music, comic aesthetics, and visual effects is utterly amazing. Brie plays the role of Envy Adams, Scott’s ex-girlfriend who is a singer and she actually sings for the movie. The rest of the cast is also impressive: Kieran Culkin, Alison Pill, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzmana, Anna Kendrick and Chris Evans
So if you are into comic aesthetics, art in general, costume design –both movies have outstanding trendy costumes– and a bit of fantasy, you should definitely give these movies a try!
