I have to admit I’m quite new to the birthstone tradition, but I set myself out to find out what they are all about and I’ve come up with this beginner’s guide to birthstones!
If you are new to the topic like me, here you’ll find some guidance. After doing some research on the topic I’ve made this cheat sheet I’ve decided to call: “A beginner’s guide to birthstones.”
Though the reason why you might be gifted your birthstone changes from culture to culture, it is said that it brings good health, fortune and protection to the wearer.
A beginner’s guide to Birthstones: List of the most famous modern birthstones
The tradition of birthstones is said to have originated in Biblical times, but it is constantly evolving. Originally, there were 12 stones on the breastplate of Aaron in the Old Testament of the Bible, each stone corresponded to a tribe of Israel and they were assigned according to one’s birth.
The modern list dates back to 1912 when the National Association of Jewelers organized gems associated with months.
January Birthstone: Garnet
This red stone represents happiness, peace and prosperity. It is said to purify the blood, stimulate metabolism and help heal hounds.
February Birthstone: Amethyst
It is typically purple and they are great to enhance creativity, concentration, and relaxation. It has the ability to boost your immune system and reduce pain.
March birthstone: Aquamarine
They are usually blue and they are thought to heal allergies, respiratory problems and provide calm.
April Birthstone: Diamond
Most diamonds are transparent and are believed to bring energy to the soul. It is a master healer that unifies mind and body.
May Birthstone: Emerald
This beautiful green stone is believed to transform negativity into positivity and they are supposed to be great to sure gut problems.
June Birthstone: Pearl and Moonstone
Perl is made by living creatures and they came in several colors. It is believed that they balance emotions. Moonstones typically look white and they are the traveler’s stone –they protect at night.
July Birthstone: Ruby
This red stone is the symbol of protection, prosperity, and passion, it energizes and stimulates the heart chakra and detoxifies the body.
August Birthstone: Peridot
The stone used to be worn as a talisman during childbirth, its green energy brings peace and mental clarity.
September Birthstone: Sapphire
It comes in several colors, but the most common type of sapphires is blue. They are natural healer stones and it is a symbol of integrity.
October Birthstone: Opal
Opals are supposed to stimulate memory and balance hormones. Opals are the stones of light.
November Birthstone: Citrine
It’s a variety of quartz and it is typically yellowish. It boosts the circulatory system and purifies.
December Birthstone: Turquoise
This bluestone is great to help heal your body and mind. It provides strength and it helps prevent panic attacks.
