Green tea, especially matcha, has become the new holy grail of beauty. Packed with antioxidants and their ability to improve brain function and heart health, it’s no wonder why everyone should give it a try. But what can it do for your hair?
Green has already been shown to offer a number of health benefits, but did you know it could actually make your hair grow faster?
Studies have proved that after the topical application of green tea extract to the scalps of people who suffer from alopecia, they have experienced increased hair growth. It can also prevent sun damage, prevent photo-aging and even prevent serious skin conditions such as skin cancer. These effects are largely due to the antioxidant properties of the polyphenols present in green tea –as they help neutralize free radicals and prevent oxidative damage.
Our scalp is skin after all, and it can also be affected by free radicals. Free radicals are unpaired electrons that are unstable and can scavenge the body seeking out other electrons to become a pair –this leads to cell, proteins and DNA damage –leading to inflammation, aging and cancer eventually.
Antioxidants like the ones present in green tea can protect us, from that free radical damage. On top of that, green tea also contains caffeine which can stimulate blood flow to the follicles and promote hair growth too.
How to use it
A good way to include green tea is to choose green tea-infused products. If you are looking for a DIY treatment you can rinse your hair with green tea –once the tea is cold you can rinse your hair in the shower.
