The skincare products we usually use have many ingredients. Some are beneficial for our skin, but some can actually damage and should be avoided. Learn which ingredients you should avoid, especially if you have sensitive skin.

It is a fact that if we read the list of ingredients contained in the skincare product, we will not be capable of understanding what they are and if they are good or not for our skin. For that reason, many specialists have searched about the ingredients labeled in the products to analyze the possible connections between them and certain health conditions. As a result, they have compiled a list of the harmful ingredients that are present in beauty and skincare products

It is an organic compound that is used to stabilize and strengthen the color and scent of skincare products. It is also used as sunblock in many makeup foundations with an SPF.  It absorbs UV Beta and UV Alpha rays, protecting the skin from the sun. However, studies have shown that this compound mimics the hormone estrogen, possibly leading to many health conditions. Moreover, it can cause allergies, redness, and irritation.

2) Phthalates

Phthalates are a large group of chemicals often used to soften plastic. The most common type of phthalate used in skin care products and fragrances is diethyl phthalate and it helps products penetrate the skin better. And when it comes to fragrances, it helps the scent stay on longer.  However, these chemicals are known for being endocrine disruptors, which means that they may interfere with the normal actions of our hormones. So be careful and opt for products that are labeled 'phthalate-free'.

3) Alcohol

Alcohol is usually used in many skin care products as a preservative, or to help products dry more quickly on your skin. There are different types of alcohol, some are safe and some others are said to be bad for the skin. Alcohols such as ethanol, isopropanol, and propanol are denatured alcohols that can produce irritation in the skin. But other types such as stearyl, cetearyl, and cetyl are safe for the skin, according to research. They help keep liquid and oil together in products, so they are usually used in products like moisturizers and sunscreens.
