You know the feeling. You wake up, brush your teeth, look up and see a "pillow face" in the mirror. They may seem to go away later in the day, but can sleep wrinkles become permanent? And can you prevent them?
This may come as a shock but after unprotected exposure to sunlight and UV, the second cause of wrinkles is sleep. Spending over 2 thousand hours per year sleeping is basically ironing lines into your face and neck. Luckily, there is a way to prevent sleep lines from appearing.
1. Use silk or satin pillowcases
This will prevent facial creases, lines, and imprints as you sleep. The less your skin grips onto your pillowcase, the less likely it will form permanent fine lines.
2. Sleep on your back
Yes, you can train yourself to sleep on your back. It may take some time to get used to, but after a couple of days, you will notice how easy it gets. You can use more pillow to prop you (we heard JLo does just that)
3. Wear a sleep mask
Besides blocking out the light (key to getting better sleep), it will form a protective layer between the delicate eye area and your pillow. Again, investing in a silk or satin one will pay off.
4. Do a quick face massage as part of your skincare routine
Face massage has been proven to prevent fine lines, help relax facial muscles, and promote lymphatic drainage. You can use massage tools, like a jade roller or a gua sha, but using your hands is just as good.
5. Boost your skincare
Using gentle chemical peels to get rid of dead cells and resurface the skin, which will minimize the appearance of wrinkles.
A good night serum or an overnight face mask will also help, by providing active ingredients, boosting hydration and collagen production.
