While traditional treatments for cystic acne can be very drying and irritating, essential oils offer a more natural approach to clearing cystic acne. This what experts recommend…
Using essential oils to help soothe cystic acne is not a new idea, whoever, it is now gaining popularity. Cystic acne is one of the most difficult acne to treat because painful pimples develop under the skin and have no clear connection to the surface of the skin. Cysts are not pickable because they are like oil balloons that become inflamed under the skin, this also makes it difficult to treat with traditional over-the-counter products. What about natural remedies like essential oils?
Benefits of essential oils
Essential oils are extracted from plants and have been used for centuries in folk medicine, nowadays they are used mainly in aromatherapy. Essential oils have also started to become a popular skincare ingredient –think of tea tree oil, lavender oil and geranium oil.
How can it treat cystic acne?
Most experts have not recommended using essential oil for acne-prone skin, because they allege it can actually make it worse. Dermatologists say it can cause allergic contact dermatitis –a very itchy rash–, and in fact no topical medication work for cystic acne because they are too deep in the skin.
However, some argue that tea tree oil might help treat acne because of its anti-inflammatory properties, but it is recommended to use products that contain the plant extract with other proven acne-fighting compounds.
Best treatments for cystic acne
The most effective way to treat cystic acne is through medication because it fights cysts from within. Antibiotics, birth control, spironolactone and Accutane are the most common medications used to target what contributes to acne: oil production, bacteria and the hormonal effect on oil glands.
So, although essential oils are highly beneficial to treat other conditions, it is better to seek traditional treatments when dealing with cystic acne. Not consulting a skin care professional can delay proper care and eventually lead to more scarring.
