Castile soap dates back to the 11th century, and when it comes to multitasking products, this might well be the number one. It can be used to wash dishes, shave your legs, wound cleaning, deodorant, body wash and all-purpose household cleaner too. But is it possible to wash your hair with castile soap as well?
Castile soaps were originally made from olive oil and nowadays they also include other plant-based oils such as coconut, hemp, almond and walnut oil. It comes in liquid or solid form and it differs from other types of soap because it is natural, non-toxic, biodegradable and it does not contain harsh detergents.
Castile soap for your hair
While typical shampoos have a lower pH and contain compounds that coat the hair to add shine and help with manageability. Castile soap, on the other hand, has a very high pH but contains no chemicals, this makes it especially useful for those who have sensitive skin. It also helps hydrate the scalp due to its oily base.
Because of its high pH levels, it is not recommended for those who color their hair, because it will end up stripping the color. Although it is good for all other hair types, for many it can result in unmanageable hair.
How to use it
First of all, it is important to dilute it, then make sure you focus on the roots and the scalp rather than the length and end of your hair –this will prevent the hair from becoming knotted. Pair it with conditioner for better results and enjoy!
