Oh, how I love having a hot shower before going to bed, especially during the winter. It is soothing, it is refreshing and it helps me sleep. But, could it actually be bad for me?
A quick hot shower is one of the greatest pleasures of humans –and please do appreciate it, if you can have a hot shower, you are one of the fortunate few. It just feels right, and while it is true that it is beneficial for your health there are some things you have to bear in mind. Let’s first look at the benefits:
Benefits of hot baths or showers
- It is a stress reliever. It relaxes your body, mind and nerves.
- It is like a nice massage to make your flow circulate better and to loosen up stiff muscles.
- It opens up your pores to clean toxins and remove impurities from the skin –this helps prevent acne –if you rinse with cold water, you will close your pores and refresh your skin.
- They help with cold symptoms. The steam is great to decongest your nose and it moisturizes your nasal passages.
Why would this be bad?
If you expose your skin to hot water for too long it can severely dry –the heat strips away the natural sebum barrier which is our defense against irritants. This could lead to eczema, acne and dandruff.
So as long as you don’t stay for too long, you can profit from the benefits of a hot shower!
