Biggest toner mistakes you're making, according to experts

These are the biggest toner mistakes you're making, according to experts. But... don't worry, these skincare mistakes are very common and easy to correct.

Forst of all, what is a toner?

Toner is a fast-penetrating liquid that hydrates the skin and helps remove some dead cells off the surface of the skin. This product looks like water but is designed to penetrate the upper layer of the skin in order to hydrate it. It may also contain multiple anti-aging ingredients.

Dermatologists suggest using toner as a spot treatment

It is important to consult the list of ingredients before putting anything on your face since you run the risk of using something that may disturb your skin instead of nourishing it. Think of the toner as a  treatment to be used after double cleansing and exfoliation of the skin. It should balance out the Ph levels of your skin, without causing any irritation.

Most common toner mistakes:

1. You're using a face toner with alcohol

Make sure you double-check the ingredients and try to go for alcohol-free toners. Luckily, there are many available on the market. Alcohol does not suit everyone and may dry your skin instead of hydrating it.

2. You're using a toner with fragrance

Fragrances are a nightmare, as companies are not required to actually disclose exactly what's in a fragrance. Meaning some may contain hundreds of chemicals you have no clue about. Opt for fragrance-free or at least make sure that the used fragrance is natural (unless your skin reacts to essential oils).

3. You're rubbing it in.

Toner should be applied as a spray or gently patted into the skin, never rubbed in with a cotton round. Your skin should feel slightly damp after toner so you can apply moisturizer on top.

Carefully check toner ingredients

4. You're using the wrong toner

Toners can be hydrating, cleansing, and exfoliating. Make sure you get the right one for your needs. They are not interchangeable. Hydrating toners are a great choice as you can use them on a daily basis. BTW, thermal water sprays are great for beach days but do not replace a good toner.

5. You are not following the right order.

Toner should be applied AFTER cleansing and BEFORE moisturizing. Make sure you do not skip this step. Some toners also work to set makeup and can be used as a last step, but the after-cleansing toner is a must.
