It might sound quite obvious how to apply eye cream, but it is not as easy as it seems. Here’s some experts’ advice on how to do it!
Anyone can benefit from applying eye cream, but the way you apply it can be reducing its effectiveness. Our eyes have the thinnest skin in our body, this implies that it is also the most delicate. It can be prone to dryness and this leads to early signs of aging –i.e.: wrinkles and fine lines. What’s more, you shouldn’t apply any type of moisturizer, you should choose one that is particularly formulated for the eyes.
How to pick your product?
The product may vary according to your specific skin concerns:
- Fine lines and crow’s feet: if you are trying to treat this type of wrinkles, you should look for formulas that contain retinol and peptides.
- Dark circles: go for brightening ingredients like niacinamide or caffeine as they help increase the blood flow and help achieve a better complexion.
Application
Wash your hands as you will be applying the cream with your fingers –you don’t want to introduce germs.
Cleanse gently the skin in your eyes to ensure the active ingredients are able to penetrate your skin.
The amount
Although you should follow the directions of the product you are choosing, half a pump or a pump of eye cream in each eye should be enough.
How to apply correctly
Dab the cream onto the back of your hand to use it as a palette, then use the tip of your ring finger to make a semi-circle of dots, starting below the inner part of your eyebrow and moving sideways and upward surrounding your eye. Finish by tapping the eye cream gently into the skin. Remember to use your ring finger in the process as it provides the least amount of pressure –we don’t want to put any strain on your skin, so please make sure you don’t rub it in!
Where do we apply it?
Check your formula first, as most creams are formulated to be used underneath and around your eye, but some of them are not meant to be used on the upper lids.
You should start the application in the inner or outer corner of your under-eye area where the top of your bone is and work your way across your under-eye tapping the cream gently until your temple. Repeat this process along the orbital bone just under your eyebrow and if your product can be used in your upper lids, you can tap it down your lids. Try to avoid getting too near your lashes.
When do we apply eye cream?
It is recommended to use in the morning and night as well, the trick is to be consistent. If you are going to apply it only once a day, try to do so at night, because it is when our skin enters into a reparative and regenerative cycle and it will boost the anti-aging effects of the eye cream.
The bottom line is that you have to be very gentle in the application and you have to be very gentle with your fingers if you don’t want to cause further damage to the skin.
