It doesn’t matter whether you are an experienced athlete or the occasional exerciser, diet is an important part of your workout routine, so how soon can you eat before a workout?
You need fuel to be able to work out, that is a fact, the primary source of fuel of your body is glucose –stored in your muscles and liver as glycogen. Then, other sources such as fat, and protein, very rarely. Glycogen is your body’s primary source of fuel and it is limited, so if you want to exercise for longer your body will turn to fat.
Eating a light meal three hours before a workout may give you the energy you need –aim at carbs, protein, and fats.
The closer you get to your workout time, the smaller your servings should be. eating less than 30 minutes before exercise can cause gastrointestinal problems.
These are some examples of healthy snacks:
2-3 hours ahead of exercise:
Two eggs with sliced avocado, a piece of whole-grain toast, and fresh fruit
1 hour ahead of exercise:
Slice of whole-grain toast with peanut butter and one sliced banana
Fruit smoothie with 1 tablespoon of peanut butter
30 minutes ahead of exercise:
Orange juice and a granola or protein bar
