Dumbbells, says Joe, can be used to increase the intensity of lots of different exercises and to help in building muscle. By holding a dumbbell when doing lunges or squats, you’ll increase resistance and make the exercise much tougher. Dumbells are also easy to store and an inexpensive set is easy to get online.
How to choose the right weight?
First of all, never copy the weight used by the PT or anyone else for that matter. If you have never trained with dumbbells, start with light ones and increase the weight gradually. The right weight is one that allows you to perform all exercises with good form but makes the last few repetitions more difficult. If you can’t do any reps, your dumbbells are too heavy. If you can easily finish the set, the dumbbells you’ve chosen are too light.
