Should care about body composition? We've been taught to watch our weight but we know very little about what body composition is, here's the ABC!
I've recently started working out regularly -since December 2020- but to my surprise, I've actually noticed that I've gained some weight, contrary to what I had thought it would be. But luckily my PT made a test on me and taught me all to know about body composition. Here's what I've learned!
What you weigh is actually a very poor indicator of what's going on with your body fat and muscles. This is why body composition comes to the rescue!
What is body composition?
Body composition is the proportion of fat and you have in your body relative to lean tissue such as muscles, bones, body water, and organs.
How is it measured?
The most common methods are:
- With a bioelectrical current -some scales come with this function.
- Skinfold measurements: what my PT did!
Why is it important to know your body composition?
It is important to see your progress in terms of volume or muscle mass vs fat, instead of taking only the weight as a parameter, when you stop putting emphasis on it, and start looking at your mental wellness, and the way you feel, your perception of your body will change!
