If you are constantly improving your skincare routine but you don't pay enough attention to your diet, you might be wasting your time (and money). Check out these foods that can speed up wrinkle development.
There are two main things that can speed up the skin aging process: sun and advanced glycation end products (AGEs). The first one, we already knew and that's why we constantly hear that sunscreen is not optional, it is a must; every single day, whether it's sunny or not. Now, if you are wondering what the second means, read on.
What are AGEs?
AGEs are, basically, proteins and lipids that become glycated when exposed to sugars. Glycation can affect normal tissue functions, so they play a role in aging. Pure chemistry. And, as such, AGEs aren't that easy to control. However, there are certain rules or guidelines you can keep in mind in order to minimize them.
What foods should be considered?
Let's start this list by saying that this is only a guideline and, of course, that eating any of these items once in a while won't make you wake up looking older. The trick is to eat in moderation, not to avoid forever and ever. That being said, let's have a look:
Sweet potatoes instead of fries
Food fried in oil at high temperatures releases free radicals, which damage the skin. If to that combination you add salt, which draws water away from your skin, the result can be quite damaging. Instead, you can try baked sweet potato french fries. Keep in mind that sweet potato is rich in anti-aging copper, so it's a win-win!
Olive oil or avocado instead of margarine
A lot of studies show that people who use margarine or butter have more skin damage than people who don't. If you want, you can swap margarine for olive oil or creamy avocado, which is rich in anti-oxidants, and smear your toast with that instead.
Ok, so this one is a bit tricky, and science says that, too. The thing with dairy is that it might increase inflammation in your body, which will cause oxidative stress. And, in case you were wondering, oxidative stress is the main cause of premature aging. On the other hand, dairy is rich in calcium, which happens to be essential for overall skin health. A great substitution, however, are seeds, almonds, and leafy greens, which are rich in calcium, too!
Alcohol in moderation
It is known that alcohol depletes your nutrients, hydration, and vitamin A levels. All of these things have a direct impact on wrinkles. So, sorry to say this, but the only solution is to drink in moderation. However, that's one drink a day for women and two for men, so it's not that bad!
