There have been many studies on the impacts of vegan diets on people's bodies, and the results are increasingly showing how effective they are. New research found out even more information on this subject, this time regarding the consequences of a plant-based diet on metabolism.
Among the many studies done on plant-based diets, there's been shown many times how good of an impact it has on the heart, digestion, and weight loss. The fact that a vegan diet helps to improve the heart's health and the digestive process has lead other experts to question the ways it boosts people's metabolism.
The study, carried out by researchers together with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, had as a target to look further into the role of a vegan diet on metabolism. This process is the one carried out by the body after foods and drinks are consumed and its components are being transformed into energy.
The randomized control trial included 244 participants, who were divided into two groups with different dietary guidances. While the first group had to follow a plant-based or vegan diet, the other one received no restrictions and, like any other control group, didn't change any elements of its diet.
It's important to point out that, even though the people from the first group received some restrictions and recommendations, they had no limits regarding calorie intake. They were simply advised to eat foods like legumes, whole grains, vegetables, and fruits.
The results were amazing! People who followed the plant-based diet showed changes related to a metabolism boost: increased weight loss (14 pounds, on average) and post-meal calorie burn (an increase of approximately 16%). A vegan diet also proved to help maintain healthy blood sugar and support the metabolism, both of which prevent the development of heart diseases, type 2 diabetes, and different health problems.
So, a vegan diet has been proven to have a positive impact on metabolism support, as well as heart health and digestion. Would you be willing to go vegan and enjoy these health benefits?
