What's the difference between vanilla extract and vanilla essence?
Vanilla essence is a processed product made with artificial flavors and colors.
Vanilla extract is made with vanilla beans, alcohol, water, and sometimes sugar.
- 4 vanilla pods
- 100 ml alcohol (40%, could be white rum or vodka)
- Chop the 4 scraped vanilla pods and pack into a small glass jar or bottle.
- Fill with alcohol and seal well.
- Shake daily.
- The extract will be strong enough to use after about a week but will benefit from longer steeping. Store in a cool, dark place.
