Chlorella & Spirulina? What are they and what are the differences

Chlorella and spirulina are both algae among many types of seaweed. They have amazing benefits for the health and many nutrients the organism can take advantage of.

Recently, chlorella and spirulina have become very popular due to all the healthy benefits they provide. Especially when talking about plant-based diets, that need to find other sources of essential nutrients that the body needs.

Both have health benefits but they present some differences.

The supplements of both are the most popular in the market. Even though they have health benefits, they have many differences.  Their protein, carbohydrate, and fat present in their composition are very similar, but their amounts of calories, vitamins, and minerals are different. Certainly, chlorella has more calories, omega-3 fatty acids, provitamin A, riboflavin, magnesium, iron, and zinc.

Beyond these differences, it is not too much to say that both are good sources of antioxidants, a compound needed to reduce the effects of the free radicals, which cause damage to cells and tissues.

Free radicals can damage the skin.

Besides, some research suggests that both may contribute to blood sugar management. Some studies found positive results, in animals and humans, when looking for this benefit. This is especially interesting for people with diabetes or insulin resistance.

If you are trying to find which is healthier, there is no correct answer. Both are comparable, have health benefits, and provide many nutrients. The differences just lie in the amounts of them. The best idea is to consult a professional who can advise which is the best option for you because supplements can interact with certain medications.
