Not just for gym bunnies, foam rolling is a form of self-massage that's beneficial for everyone. And Kayla Itsines shows us how to do it. 

What is foam rolling?

Foam rolling is a self-myofascial release (SMR) method, a self-massage that is used to help with muscle and joint pain. 

What do I need for it?

You will need a foam roller, which is a lightweight, cylindrical tube of compressed foam that comes in a variety of sizes.

What are the benefits? 

Some of the benefits of foam rolling (if done on regular basis) are:

  1. alleviates soreness after a workout
  2. helps in muscle repair recovery
  3. helps injury prevention by maintaining muscle length 
  4. remedies tightness 
  5. increases blood flow and elasticity of muscle tissue, joints, and fascia
  6. helps overall mobility
  7. promotes relaxation

If unsure about your technique, ask a trainer at your local gym on how to do this correctly. Be aware, if you have never done foam rolling before, it's not the most comfortable of sensations. But it does pay to stick to it!
