It is completely normal to have some belly fat, and if it is subcutaneous fat –the kind you can pinch with your fingers–, it is not generally a threat to your health. Visceral fat, however, can lead to serious health conditions.
Visceral fat is the kind of fat that lies deep within the abdominal cavity and this can lead to an increased risk of heart diseases, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol or other serious conditions.
There are some measures you can take to reduce the risks. Exercise is still one of the healthiest life choices you can make, 30 minutes of physical activity a day can make a big difference. The food you choose also influences greatly your overall health.
These are foods you should stay away from if you want to shed belly fat
1. Cheese
Cheese is usually high in calories and saturated fat, so you want to limit the amount of cheese you eat as much as possible.
2. Soft drinks
Soda is sweetened either with artificial sugars or high-fructose corn syrup, both increase intra-abdominal fat and lead to bloating.
3. Processed meats
Processed meat such as sausages, salami, bacon, canned meats are high in fat, salt, cholesterol and nitrates –this makes processed meat extremely unhealthy. Instead, choose plant proteins or lean meats like grilled chicken or fish.
4. Alcohol
While a glass of red wine now and then is not a problem, drinking alcohol every day might not be a good idea. Alcohol will not help you get a flat belly or lose weight, so drink in moderation.
5. Low-fat Salad dressings
While olive oil is a great source of antioxidants, low-fat or fat-free salad dressings are pretty unhealthy. they contain genetically modified or processed oils, artificial flavors and preservatives that detriment your health. Go for olive oil, lemon or vinegar for a healthier alternative.
6. Refined bread
Refined carbs promote inflammation and weight gain. Replace it with fiber soluble foods like legumes, oats and flaxseeds.
7. Salt
Though salt does not actually contain calories, it can lead to bloating and water retention. Besides not adding unnecessary salt while you are cooking, you should avoid foods with high sodium content.
8. “Diet” food
Low-calorie and diet foods are usually packed in sodium and preservatives that can irritate the lining of the stomach and cause other issues. Fruits, cucumbers, nuts and veggies are more nutritious and are low in calories too!
