Overnight oats are a favourite staple of ours. Easy, quick and no fuss breakfast that makes mornings just a little bit easier. So how do you make an already nutritious breakfast even more beneficial? Easy! Add any of these 5 ingredients and enjoy a healthier morning.
1. Berries
Berries are low in calories but high in nutrition. Full of antioxidants and vitamins, they will provide sweetness to your oats. Frozen berries are a bit cheaper than fresh ones and equal in nutritional value. A creative way of adding berries to oatmeal is by blending them with chia seeds and a splash of maple syrup or honey. This will make a delicious jam you can top your breakfast with.
Yum!
2. Earl Grey/Chai Tea
Soak the oats in earl grey or chai tea instead of water or milk and enjoy the amazing flavour. Tea also contains caffeine and amino acids that will help you stay alert in the morning.
3. Silken tofu
For an extra protein kick, mix your oats with silken tofu, then top with cinnamon and dried fruits or nuts. We use silken tofu as it’s easier to mince with a fork and the texture goes well with oatmeal. Super power breakfast ready.
4. Zucchini
The famous “zoats”. Grate a zucchini and mix with the overnight oats. It’s a welcome addition of some extra fibre and a sneaky way to add more veg to your diet.
5. Spices
We all know spices provide a lot of health benefits, so why not add some to your oats? Turmeric for its anti-inflammatory properties, cinnamon to help maintain blood sugar levels, sweet masala for all that and more. Simply top your oats with 1/4 teaspoon of your spice of choice and enjoy!
