If you are baking, you need yeast –it is the ingredient that causes the dough to rise, but what if you don’t have any at home?
We’ve all been there, you want to bake some bread you reach for your fridge or pantry and there is no yeast left, don’t worry this is what you can use to replace it!
1. Baking powder
Baking powder is perfectly fine if you don’t have any yeast at home. It is made of baking soda and an acid –usually cream of tartar. It acts as a leavening agent that works in two ways:
- It reacts with liquid to produce carbon dioxide bubbles.
- It reacts with heat and the gas bubbles expand and make the dough rise.
2. Baking soda
Using baking soda combined with lemon juice, buttermilk, milk, and vinegar mixed in a one-to-one ratio of cream of tartar. To use it replace half the required amount of yeast with baking soda and the other half with one of the previous ingredients. That is to say, if a recipe calls for 2 teaspoons of yeast, simply use 1 teaspoon of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of acid.
Yeast is an essential element if you are making bread, but don’t worry if you forgot to get it! You can use any of the later substitutes and prepare your bun of choice!
