In the market, there are products labeled as deodorants, others only as antiperspirants, and others still that are antiperspirant deodorants. Quite confusing right? Let me tell you the truth!
Deodorants vs antitranspirants
Deodorants are cosmetic products designed to eliminate odor without altering our body's elimination of sweat. They act by preventing the action of bacteria that produce the decomposition of sweat, absorbing the secretion, or masking the smell with other substances such as perfumes.
Antiperspirant products work by decreasing the amount of sweat our body eliminates, obstructing its exit through the skin.
There are antiperspirant products that contain complexes of aluminum and zirconium salts that are much safer, reducing both skin irritation and damage to clothing regardless of the user's skin type or sensitivity. Another component of both deodorants and antiperspirants that could affect the skin is ethyl alcohol.
Spray, roll-on, or creams?
Products, whether deodorants or antiperspirants, can come in different cosmetic forms, such as sprays, creams, roll-on, lotions, liquids, and bars, among others.
The choice will only depend on the taste of the user. Despite the fact that it is possible to add active deodorants and antiperspirants to all these different presentations, studies on the effectiveness of antiperspirants carried out show that aerosol products are not as effective as other cosmetic forms.
Same for men or women
The differentiation by sex generally lies in the preferences of aromas/fragrances between men and women, although there are special products with a higher concentration of antiperspirant or deodorant actives or a mixture of both to control sweating in more severe cases and with a longer duration of effect.
Many people worry about some components of deodorants and antiperspirants. While the American Cancer Society found claims linking breast cancer and deodorants do not have a solid scientific grounding, more and more people now opt for natural deodorants, that contain no parabens or aluminum. It is however true, that some people may experience irritation or an allergic reaction to certain antiperspirant components.
Natural deodorants are usually made with coconut oil or shea butter and essential oils and contain no parabens or aluminum. They also tend to come in plastic-free packaging, thus attracting those worried about plastic pollution.
