Nail decoloration is quite common and I'm sure like everyone else what you do to fix it is painting your nails, but could it be a sign of a vitamin deficiency?
Normal nail beds are usually on the pink side, but sometimes, a shade of yellow might start to appear. It is quite common and you normally wouldn't have to worry.
Yellow nails may happen for several reasons, dark nail polish may stain your nails, other types of pain, or even self-tanning notions could be responsible for the yellowish color. But could it be a sign of a vitamin deficiency?
What causes yellow nails
As mentioned before, wearing any nail polish that it's too dark may stain your nails. It can interact with the keratin in your nails and lead to yellow discoloration and it might even make your nails brittle.
Smoking is also one of the main reasons why your nails might become yellow, and some fungal nail infections lead to the thickening of the nail and the accumulation of dirt beneath it.
Other conditions like liver disease can cause your nails to become yellow.
The bottom line
Vitamin deficiencies cause a lot of symptoms, but yellow nails is not one of them as it is often believed. If you notice your nails are persistently yellow and none of the above reasons apply to you, make sure to consult a doctor.
