Winter lips: is it actually OK to use lip balm all day every day?

Suffering from dry lips is the worst: they chap, crack, and hurt. No wonder why some of us are addicted to lip balms but did you know that maybe your lip balm addiction is actually making it worse?

Having dry lips can be extremely annoying: they crack, peel, and sometimes bleed. No wonder why some of us are addicted to lip balm. While lip balms don’t contain any addictive element in their formula, the habit of applying balm can itself become an addiction. The reason is that it soothes the uncomfortable feeling only for a few hours and then, we rush to our bags for another quick fix of lip balm. To rehab from this repetitive behavior, we need to dig deeper into the problem.

The cause

As the skin in our lips is not the same as the skin on other parts of the body, lips lack the same nourishing oil glands. The food we eat and not hydrating well can affect our mouth. Also, when our lips are dry we tend to lick them, which in turn causes the enzymes in saliva to dry our mouth even more.

Some of us always carry a lip balm tube in our bags.

The addiction

We all get a kick out of applying lip balm because it makes us feel as if our lips were smoother, when, in fact, some of the ingredients present in normal lip balms –preservatives, fragrances, petroleum-based oil– can actually irritate lips. Hence: the more you apply the balm, the more you need it.

The more you apply the balm, the more you need it.

The cure

Invest in a balm that helps heal and hydrate your lips. Jojoba oil, omega oil, and ceramides are a great choice.
