How not to over-exfoliate your face

Exfoliation is good for your skin, in fact, it is necessary, but there is a fine line between unclogging your pores and over-exfoliating, this is how not to cross that line.

We've all at some point gone overboard with the exfoliation and ended up feeling that not-so-pleasant tingly sensation, redness that can compromise your skin barrier function. No matter the type of exfoliation you choose, you have to make sure you don't end up causing more harm than good to your skin.

Proper exfoliation is paramount to help slough off dead skin cells, excess sebum and debris buildup. Regular exfoliation will help your skin look glowy, dewy and bright, but if you exfoliate too often, you ae likely to hurt your skin.

Check the ingredients in your skincare to make sure you are not using several products with exfoliating agents. For example, if you are using glycolic acid and retinol, and you add a physical exfoliant, you are likely to cause irritation, flaking skin, breakouts and redness. If you've just started exfoliating, try going for mild products,  in small quantities. To play it safe, using a chemical exfoliator is better as it offers more control over the results and it avoids causing microtears to your skin.

Never neglect the moisturizer after you've applied any type of exfoliator, this will make your skin barrier stay strong and healthy.

If you want some extra protection, add an occlusive such as a facial oil or glycerine and don't ever forget SPF. As to how ofter you should exfoliate, it will largely depend on your skin type, but I would not do it more than once a week.
