Eyebrows: How long does it take for them to grow back?

If you’ve overplucked your eyebrows you might even wonder “Will they ever grow back?” and if so, “how long will it take?” Here’s what experts have to say about it.

Losing your brows can cause some distress, especially now that the perfect brows are key to what is considered beautiful these days. Let’s first have a look at what might make you lose your brows.

Causes of brow loss

Do they grow back?

Overplucking and waxing can lead to brow thinning and it could even kill the follicle so it will never grow again. If you rub your arches too much it can pull your hairs out and of course, genes, hormones, stress, vitamin deficiency and eczema can affect the hair follicles. The best way to diagnose the reason for your hair loss is better to consult a specialist.

Do they grow back?

The answer is, yes, they can grow back. It depends, however, on the reason behind the hair loss. Eyebrow loss from alopecia areata can usually be treated with in-office treatments –cortisone injections. And hair loss from waxing and tweezing can improve if you stop.

The problem is when a follicle dies, you cannot simply bring it to life. if it is dormant it can be regrown with a little help. However, if a hair is removed repeatedly from the root, it will eventually get too damaged to grow back.

How long do they take to grow back?

It would take normally from four to eight weeks to grow them again after you’ve removed them. This is the hair growth cycle:

1. Anagen phase: this is when the eyebrow grows to a predetermined limit –it takes from 30 to 45 days.

2. Catagen Phase: this is the transition phase it is when the follicle moves closer to the skin and begins to shrink before reaching the final stage.

3. Telogen phase: new hair begins to grow from the hair follicle, as the eyebrow grows, the old hair falls off and the new strand continues to grow. This can take from four to eight weeks.

The entire hair growth cycle takes about four to six months, but if the hair was only shaved, the hair does not have to regrow from the follicle.
