DIY reusable makeup remover pads: skincare without damaging the environment

Are you concerned about the environment? Well, you can start by reducing your waste and here is a tip to not only save money but also incorporate more Zero Waste strategies.

Did you know that the non-organic cotton farming industry is one of the major sources of environmental pollution? It uses up to 10% of pesticides of the world and the toxic chemicals involved in the production of cotton can cause health problems for the workers and pollute wildlife and rivers as well.

I realized that I use at least 700 cotton pads a year and I decided that this could come to an end, so I made up my mind to make my own reusable makeup remover pads with elements I had at home –of course, you can customize them and let your creativity flow! This is what you’ll need:

Duration: 5 minutes

Cost: 0

You'll need scissors, thread, a needle, an old t-shirt and a towel.

How to

  1. Wash, dry and iron the fabrics, it is easier to work with them.
  2. Cut both fabrics into squares or circles –whatever you fancy– the size might vary according to what you prefer.
Cut both fabrics into squares or circles.
  3. Pin in the middle both fabrics so you can stitch them around. If you have a sewing machine, you can use it, but it is fairly easy to do it by hand. Leave a small opening so you can flip it out.
  4. Flip it out, then fold the opening in and press it with an iron, then stitch it around the edges and that’s it!
Make sure you wash them after each use to keep your skin clean.

I made a batch of a dozen of them so I can easily toss them in the washing machine with my other towels. Please do make sure you wash them after each use to keep your skin clean.

If you use them dry on your skin, you can also use them to exfoliate! The benefits are many, you’ll be recycling old materials, it costs virtually nothing, you won’t be spending on cotton pads ever again and you’ll be contributing to the environment.

Will you give it a try?
