Consumers more informed and committed to the environment are changing their shopping habits to promote responsible consumption.
Responsible consumption is called the purchases we make in a conscious and sustainable way, in order to take care of the environment. It has to do with finding out about the way in which the products and services offered in the market and gastronomy are made, processed, packed, and distributed, and choosing those that we consider more sustainable and ecological and with a lower environmental impact or contamination.
How to know when consumption is responsible?
1. Be informed
It is very important to know how to distinguish healthy food from one that is not, due to its qualities and freshness, as well as its origin. A big help is checking food labeling.
2. Buy locally
Local markets are generally supplied by a small network of fishermen. In the case of seasonal vegetables, they were surely produced by local farmers and did not have to travel thousands of kilometers to be on your table.
3. Eat less animal meat
It is proven that the vast majority of gases and carbon dioxide emissions are generated by intensive livestock farming for the meat industry in all countries of the world. According to Greenpeace Mexico, this percentage would correspond to 24% globally.
4. Buy in bulk
According to the European Food Information Council (EUFIC), it is best to buy everything that can come without extra packaging, that is sold loose, and if it is packaged, it is with biodegradable packaging. Ideally, go to these places with our own packaging.
5. Avoid transgenic products
Many GMO fruits and vegetables can look great and last much longer without spoiling, but they do not have the flavor or nutritional properties of those grown in the garden.
6. Buy fresh products
Faced with world hunger and malnutrition, the amount of food that is spoiled by the distance it travels to the point of sale is a social, economic, ecological, and even ethical problem.
In this sense, replacing beef or shrimp in a meal with food of eco-friendly origin also has its environmental impact. For every kilo of beef we eat, large amounts of carbon dioxide are released into the atmosphere. In the same way, every kilo of prawns we consume supposes the destruction of a mangrove.
For this reason, the actions we take on a daily basis in relation to sustainable food have a positive impact on the planet.
· They achieve energy efficiency. The purchase by the proximity of products reduces the times of transfer and delivery from harvest to consumption, reducing the emission of gases by transport in vehicles and refrigeration of products.
· Consuming local products helps to conserve food cultural heritages and generate sustainable gastronomic tourism. The regional wine routes are a clear example of this, with everything that is generated around the production of wine, olive, beauty products based on grape oil.
· Support to small producers and entrepreneurs for the economic development of the communities. Industrial food production has endangered many diverse local culinary cultures, which have begun to be lost. Buying nearby is synonymous with an eco-friendly practice, it helps to create employment, reduces pollution and food waste, but above all, it contributes to generating food sovereignty for the peoples.
