Choosing what’s good for your skin and good for the environment was something we would have never thought of in the past. It is high time we started finding new ways of recycling empty beauty products.
Plastic pollution is a huge environmental problem and personal care products are one of the main polluters, that is why brands are trying to make formulas, packaging entirely biodegradable.
What is biodegradable?
If the packaging is biodegradable, it can be broken down by microorganisms over time –this is not a very helpful definition, because most things will eventually break down, the problem is how much time it takes. Thus, for plastic to be certified as biodegradable in the EU and UK, materials must ensure it’s free from potentially harmful metals and chemicals, it must be biodegradable and the compost itself should not pose any hazard for the environment.
Biodegradable materials:
Bamboo, plant-based bioplastic, seaweed, hemp and coconut husk.
What is compostable?
It is the ability of the material to break down completely within a specific time frame –usually 12 weeks, pretty amazing, right?
Compostable materials
Paper, straw, cardboard, brown paper bags, sugarcane pulp (bagasse), corn starch, palm leaf and wood pulp.
