Have you ever stop to think about the safety of scented candles? There’s a new trend pushing for clean fragrances and it is here to stay. Let’s find out!
What is a clean fragrance?
Although the term clean has not been legally defined, it is already used to describe some characteristics of the scents used in creating candles. Clean candles should be free of phthalates, parabens, allergens, and chemicals that haven’t been tested for safety.
Makers of fragrance don’t need to specify the ingredients of their scent, therefore, when we read 'fragrance’ on any product label –including candles– this might include allergens, endocrine-disrupting phthalates, and other chemicals that haven’t even been tested.
How do we choose our candles?
First of all, choose products that contain only natural fragrances, that haven’t been blended with paraffin and those which will affect your air quality the least.
These are some options:
Soy candles and other vegetable-based candles
They are vegan, made of renewable products and the options are endless: coconut wax, apricot oil, and soy wax. A solid form of hydrogenated soybean oil is used to create this marvelous natural renewable product. Unlike paraffin –a by-product of crude oil refining– soy wax is a pure compound with which to make candles. In addition, they last longer because soy wax burns more slowly, and they are easily cleaned with soap and hot water.
Beeswax is the all-natural, no-toxic waxy substance secreted by bees after consuming honey. They use this to construct their honeycombs and after being filtered, it can be used to produce candles. They produce negative ions when burned and they help neutralize pollutants in the air, this means that they will help eliminate dust, odors, and mold in the atmosphere. They are safe and they have the brightest light of any candles.
So next time you go shopping for candles, try to choose one of the clean options!
