Forgotten makeup bag? 5 DIY beauty hacks to do at home

Have you run out of whitening toothpaste and your meeting is in half an hour? Can’t find the eyelash curler or lip balm and you’re already late for work? Panic not, the solution is probably in your kitchen.

We list everyday items and ingredients that will save the day. So next time you forget your makeup bag, you'll have some great tricks up your sleeve.

1. Sugar, ground coffee and oats for glowing skin

Brown sugar is great as a exfoliant

All three are top-notch exfoliants. Just mix half a cup of oat flour, sugar of coffee with two tablespoons of lemon juice, and half a cup of (any) oil. Use on legs, arms, or lips for a perfectly even and glowing skin. We love using the coffee leftover from the French press. Try once and you’ll never buy mass-produced exfoliant again.

2. No time to buy a face mask? Honey to the rescue

Honey as a facemark

The benefits of honey are innumerable. In addition to addressing blemishes, it acts as a great antioxidant. And if you want to get rid of pimples and blackheads, it's ideal too. Pour 1/4 cup of honey in a bowl and apply it with your fingers all over your face and neck. Leave on for 10-15 minutes and wash off with warm water.

3. No bronzer around?

Cocoa as a bronzer

Let’s face it. Bronzer is a game-changer. Try it once and you’re converted. Now, what happens if you’ve run out/left it somewhere/couldn’t find you fave shade? No worries, cinnamon or cocoa and powdered sugar (or baby powder) will do the job. Just mix them in a clean jar, adding a little bit of cinnamon or cocoa until you get the right shade and enjoy the healthy glow.

4. Strawberries for a top smile

Strawberries for whiter teeth

A smiling face is a beautiful face, right? Well, strawberries will be your best allies for whiter teeth. Just smash a couple in a container and mix with a tiny bit of baking soda. Then apply to your teeth using a brush. Done! Strawberries also double up a great lip balm, providing a nice sheer finish.

5. Eyelash curler missing? Reach for a spoon

Spoon as an eyelash curler

Eyelash curler and mascara are a match made in heaven. But what if the curler broke, went missing or you forgot to pack it? Don’t panic just yet. You will probably have access to a spoon, and that’s all you need. Hold it under warm water or a hairdryer for a sec. Make sure it's not too hot! With the bowl part facing upwards, hold your lashes against the curve. Don’t thank us, thank Miranda Kerr for this one.
